In the XII and XIII centuries, two related families lived in the region, the Capella and the Cornuti families (not necessarily Italian, since the names are Latin). Giloti di Cornuti was one of the first lords of the château. This family kept the fiefdom until 1364. It appears that they built this first fortified house with the blessing of the monks of Saint Chef, since the region at that time was under their control.
It was in 1601 that Chapeau Cornu acquired the statuts of a château, which earned it the rights of court ruling and the political rights on its territory.
Since after the Capellas and Cornutis the domain was always transmitted by inheritance to related families, if not in the direct line.
The Revolution began at Chapeau Cornu during the night of July 25-26, 1789, only 15 days after the capture of the Bastille at the time of the days of "The Great Fear".

Everywhere the rumor circulated thet a foreign invasion was imminent. Men assembled in the cities with whatever arms they could find. There was an important assembly in Bourgoin, Crémieu. The enemy expected from Savoy did not come ; men were encouraged to go home, but being worked up, they did not want to obey the autorities. They decided to take vengeance by going to destroy the property certificates (deeds) of all the surrounding property owners. Bands formed and thus it was that a band of rioters arrived at the Château de Chapeau Cornu, July 26, at one in the morning. The guardian had the idea of treating them as guests and opening the doors of wine cellars to them. The damage was significant below ground! The wine which was no drunk, was emptied, but the château remained intact.
After the Revolution, the château was bought by Jean André Barge, of the Certeau family. All the lords who lived at Chapeau Cornu brought many improvements to it over the course of centuries.
In 1945, the château changed direction completely. The Abbé Boutineau bought it to turn into a boarding school which he called "the morning star". The particular nature of this school was due to its pedagogic methods. But the Abbé boutineau fell sick and died in a few months in 1959. His school did not survive him, and his brother, raoul boutineau decided to sell the château.
In 1961, a group of families from Lyon bought it for their vacations.
Beginning in 1978, considering Chapeau Cornu as a flower in the ancestral patrimony of the lower Dauphiné, a dozen communities led by Bourgoin-Jallieu established an association of villages (Syndicat Intercommunal) in order to assure the survival of the château.
