Chromium/copper measurements

ABSTRACT :

In order to measure contents of the chromium in carbon steel pipe samples, several types of files have been adopted. Files used for this purpose has to have hardness better than 72 Rockwell C (HRC). In general, however, very little information is provided for the contents of the file or the hardness of the files even though it is adopted for the sampling process. Therefore, it is necessary to have an experimental data for the files adopted for the sampling or to develop a new technique in order to prevent any contamination by the file itself. We performed a preliminary test for several sampling files in order to improve sampling quality in measurement of chromium for above samples. A disk form of SRM 1227 was ground with the hand flat file and the amount of Cr in the filings was determined by ICP-AES. Since the measured contents of chromium in the ground samples of SRM 1227 was much higher than the certified value, the contents of chromium in the file was independently measured in order to find any contamination by files. The measured chromium content was 0.63% which was much higher concentration of chromium in samples, approximately 0.1%. To prevent a contamination of chromium from the file, it was coated with WC-12Co by high velocity oxygen-fuel (HVOF) spraying systems. Using the coated file, the results for Cr determined using ICP-AES in the four kinds of SRMs were in good agreement with the certified values. Therefore, measurements of chromium contents in the filings collected from the used outlet headers of the nuclear power plants were carried out by an ICP-AES.
